Lastweek it was revealed that taxpayers are pitching in $162 million for Amazon,one of the world’s richest companies, to film a season of its Lord of the Ringstelevision series.

上周有消息称，我国纳税人将为名列全球最富有企业排行榜的亚马逊(Amazon)出资1.62亿美元拍摄一季电视剧版的《指环王》(Lord of the Rings)。

Thishandout is emblematic of a clunky, ad hoc approach to attracting internationalbusiness. We should be attracting business on the basis of our economic merits:that would involve lower taxes, flexible employment laws, and minimal red tape,not just for one company or sector, but for all.

这种利用补贴吸跨国企业的方式效率低下、并不常见。我们应该借助本国经济优势来吸引企业，包括较低的税收、灵活的劳动法、极少的官僚作风；这些优势不仅仅适用于某一企业或部门，而是全行业。

TheMinister responsible, Stuart Nash, argues subsidies are part and parcel of theinternational film industry. That’s politicianspeak for "we’re fighting abidding war with taxpayer money". Amazon uses its nearendless lobbyingresources to play different governments off one another.

但分管部长斯图尔特·纳什(Stuart Nash)认为，补贴是发展国际电影产业的必要手段。这是政客们企图掩盖"用纳税人的钱打竞标战"的话术。亚马逊利用其庞大的游说资源，怂恿政府间相互博弈。

Accordingto the Minister's rosey predictions, Season One will employ 2,100 peopledirectly and indirectly (whatever that means), for the $162.5 million insubsidies. That's the taxpayer tipping in $77,380 per job – per year.

根据纳什部长的乐观预测，亚马逊为获得1.625亿美元的补贴，第一季《指环王》项目将直接或间接雇佣2100人（不论工作性质）。这意味着纳税人每年需为每份工作支付77,380美元的小费。

Whathappens when Amazon threatens to send the production of future televisionseasons overseas? The Government will have to choose between facinghumiliation, or forking out an even bigger subsidy.

一旦亚马逊威胁要把《指环王》未来几季的拍摄和制作移至海外，又会发生什么事情呢？届时，政府将不得不在丢面子或支付更加巨额的补贴之间做出选择。
